creation vs. consumption

too often in life, the compulsion to consume wins out over the need to create. but for a soul to thrive, it needs for the balance to fall in creation’s favor. it’s the physical world’s opposite. here, where we’re bones and blood, the more we consume, the fuller we become. to fill our souls, though, we must create.

all that’s just a long, pretentious way of saying it’s time for me to create. not to recycle others’ creations, nor to limit myself to short, 140-character wordbursts, but to write, code, design, build, cook and play things that are thoughtful, meaningful and potent. consider this the beginning of something.

“part of you pours out of me in these lines from time to time.” - joni mitchell

this version’s by james blake. and damn is it beautiful.

and also, like all men, perhaps there’ll be an occasion, maybe a summer night sometime, when he’ll look up from what he’s doing and listen to the distant music of a calliope and hear the voices and the laughter of the people and the places of his past. and perhaps across his mind there’ll flit a little errant wish, that a man might not have to become old, never outgrow the parks and the merry-go-rounds of his youth. and he’ll smile then, too, because he’ll know it is just an errant wish, some wisp of memory, not too important really, some laughing ghosts that cross a man’s mind, that are a part of the twilight zone.
rod serling, preface to an episode of the twilight zone, “walking distance.”

good song, bill. “electrocution,” by bill fox.

…he had not come here to flirt with girls. He didn’t have time for it, and furthermore, he did not feel that he was entitled to such pleasures, or to the commitments that they would inevitably entail.

i wouldn’t mind if i could find
a little electrocution
i need a jolt, some thunderbolts
of a little electrocution
